Message from the Board of Education
After eight years of notable service to the students and staff of the Carlsbad Unified School District, Dr. John Roach has announced that he will retire from his position as Superintendent effective June 30, 2012. The Board of Education regrets the loss of this fine leader, but will take all necessary steps to secure the next great superintendent for our District. True to Dr. Roach's character and integrity, he has provided the Board ample notice to ensure that the Board can conduct an extensive search. The Board of Trustees is committed to securing the right brand of leadership, talent, and experience to meet our District's needs and to ensure continued progress and preparation of our students for success in the 21st century. The Board has initiated a statewide search, and will keep the community informed as the search process progresses.

Research and Information Collection
The Board-selected Superintendent Search Team consultants will arrange February meetings with employee, parent, student, and community and civic leader representatives to gather their thoughts on District, education and leadership themes. This input will be instructive to the Board as the Board specifies the leadership traits that are essential for the success of our new superintendent.
Participants in specific focus group meetings will receive notices of invitation in the coming days. Following these invitational meetings, the consultants will hold an open meeting to ensure that all interested district and community members have the opportunity to provide input. The date of the open meeting will be Thursday, February 23, 2012, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, at Magnolia Elementary School. The Board intends to complete the applicant screening process and be engaged in the interviews by May, with the aim of announcing Dr. Roach's successor and our leadership transition plan by June 2012.
"Community Input Is Always Valued and Greatly Appreciated"
A Message from the CUSD Board of Trustees
The Carlsbad community consistently and reliably demonstrates strong support for our public schools. From making contributions to our schools and the Carlsbad Education Foundation to carefully studying education issues during elections, Carlsbad parents, school neighbors, business and civic leaders play a key role in keeping our schools strong.
Just as we are quick to ask for your support, so too are we eager to hear your thoughts on the essential leadership traits for our next dynamic Superintendent of Schools.
Scheduling and logistical practicalities limit the number of people who can participate in upcoming focus group meetings. However, we are committed to provide a place for everyone to be heard. If you have not received an invitation to a specific focus group meeting, please plan to join the search team consultants at community meeting, and make sure that your thoughts are heard.
